Stanley Barracks

Stanley Barracks

Summary

The Stanley Barracks is the sole remaining structure of the New Fort at York erected in 1841 by the British Army.  The New Fort consisted of seven limestone buildings surrounding a parade square and was located within the grounds of today’s Canadian National Exhibition. Archaeological remains of the East Enlisted Men’s Barracks remain below the paved surface to the north-east of the Stanley Barracks.

E.R.A Architects Inc. prepared a Heritage Impact Assessment report reviewing the impact of the proposed hotel development on the Heritage assets at this site.  This report included strategies for exposing, protecting and integrating the archaeological remains of the East Enlisted Men’s Barracks, preserving the Stanley Barracks Building, while providing a legible reference to the Fort context through landscaping and built form.
