King Edward Hotel – The Crystal Ballroom

Summary
The King Edward Hotel in downtown Toronto has remained one of the city’s leading hotels since its opening day in May 1903. The double-height Crystal Ballroom, located on the 17th and 18th floors with views to the south, east and west, opened its doors in 1922 and remained one of the city’s premier entertainment spaces for nearly 50 years. Sadly, it has been unoccupied and disused since the late 1970s.
In 2007, ERA was engaged as Architect and Heritage Consultant, with interior design by Croma Design, to restore the decrepit, designated ballroom, and to design modern new lobby, bar, washroom and kitchen spaces. The revitalized event space was intended to open to the public in early 2010. In late 2008, shortly before construction was scheduled to begin, the project was put on hold indefinitely due to the economic downturn.
